Cats and dogs have different protein needs. “Cats require meat as a source of protein whereas dogs can obtain protein from grain sources,” writes Ann. N. Martin in Food Pets Die For (NewSage Press, 2008).

But canines also need the right combination of protein, carbohydrates, fiber and fat, she says. Veterinarians agree that all animals’ needs are different. “There’s no ‘perfect diet,’“ says Robert Silver, DVM. But after surveying vets for advice on her own homemade pet food, Martin concludes, “The best combination of ingredients for my dog’s meals is one-third protein, one-third carbohydrates and one-third vegetables and fruits.” Silver says chicken and poultry are the most commonly used proteins in prepared pet food. And although a diverse diet—as for humans—might be beneficial for a dog, allergy problems can make a more narrow diet necessary, he says.

I have been feeding natural diets for 14 years in my practice and find that following the natures recipe - cats are true carnivores thriving on 90 -100% meat and organs. Dogs do well on 70 - 75 % meat and raw bones and 25- 30 % veggies plus other healthy foods and no or very little grain. If unsure, look at felines and canines in the wild and see what their diet is...
