Dole and Monsanto join forces to develop new breeds of veggies
July 23,2009

In a new collaboration between the Monsanto Company and Dole Fresh Vegetables, Inc., plant breeding will be used to enhance the look, aroma, texture and taste of certain vegetables, but some natural food advocates say such "tinkering" is not necessary.

The five-year collaboration will focus on broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce and spinach. The breeding is also expected to improve the vegetables' nutritional value, according to the companies.

"I'm skeptical," said Bill Freese, science and policy analyst for the Center for Food Safety. "Especially with spinach and broccoli, they are already chock-full with nutrients. We don't need to tinker with them to make them more nutritious. What we need is more diverse diets."

Monsanto spokeswoman Riddhi Trivedi-St. Clair said no genetic engineering will be used in this collaboration between Dole and Monsanto, the makers of RoundUp, who also develop genetically-engineered crops to resist the herbicide.

"This collaboration is based on development through breeding, as opposed to genetic modification. It's very basic. Farmers have done it for centuries," she said. "There may be biotechnology with vegetables, eventually, but this collaboration won't have any genetic engineering."

The enhancements will be done through molecular marker assisted breeding. Basically, by hybridizing, Monsanto will study the genes through use of monecular markers to determine what makes vegetables taste better, look better, have better texture or contain the most nutrients. Plants with desirable qualities will be selected and bred until researchers find the right combination of characteristics.

Freese agrees the technique is nothing new, but basically a process that involves looking at the full set of genes associated with a crop and finding certain traits that can be used in the breeding process, but he still questions Monsanto's motives.

"When you have big, industrialized agri-business promising to produce more flavor and more nutrients, it goes against the entire history of food industrialization," he said. "The industry's tasteless tomato was bred to withstand longer transport and shelf life, not for taste or nutrition. Historically, that is not where their interests have been."

Freese added that Monsanto has promised super crops in the past, but has only produced crops that can tolerate herbicide and resistant pests.

But with its collaboration with Dole, the two companies say they will produce better tasting and more nutritional food that will strengthen the American diet. The companies joined forces because Dole is a large producer of fruits and vegetables and Monsanto brings a lot to the table in terms of research and development, Trivedi-St. Clair said.

This is an outrage...We do not need either of these companies tampering with our food. Monsanto will figure out how to control the seed so that only they have the seeds for sale and Dole will become the sole source supplier. We need to husband the earth and keep all the the manifest forms of fruits and vegetables that already exist and have supplied nourishment for generations if not tens of thousands of years.

I think I shall circulate this article far and wide. This is very BAD press for Dole.

What on earth can we do to stop this madness, this is an outrage monsanto is up to it old tricks of control, control, control. Not only are they genetically modiifying seed they are trying to geneticaly meat to achieve total world dominance. Control the food; control the world!

What a joke, but the joke is on America if we fall for it.

I am not sure what people are mad about - plant breeding is done all the time; where do you think seeds come from? if they breed out the "gassyness"from sprouts and the kidney stone making, oxalic acid from spinach, I would eat more of the stuff.

I certainly will stop buying anything from Dole. Anyone siding with Monsanto can't be trusted.

I agree, it is an outrage. The focus seems to be for their pocketbooks and not for people's long term health. Supporting organic local farming is the way to go.

healthy soil, sunshine, rain and mother nature is all that's needed for nutritious food. there are hundreds of farmers and average citizens that grow highly nutritious foods everyday. it is so simple if you are not greedy. these companies should be shut down.

Monsanto needs to be brought down for creating disease along with Merck. Monsanto you sicken me. YOU are Demonic Forces that need brought down.

COULD IT BE THAT MONSANTO, WORLD HEALTH, THE UN AND OTHERS MENTIONED ARE UNDER POSSIBLE LAW SUITS AND THE FACT OF POSSIBLE INDICTMENTS. SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? THEIR CREDITIBILITY NEEDS A BOOST AS THE EVIDENCE AGAINST THEM IS STAGGERING. LOOK AT THE RECENT BILL PRESIDENT OBAMA IS INTRODUCTING FOR 300 BILLION TO GET MORE FDA AND THE AGRICULTURE DEPT CHANGING AND ENFORCING LAWS ABOUT THE CONTAMINATED FOOD INDUSTRY. INDICTMENTS FROM EVIDENCE AND PUBLIC PRESSURE CAN DO WONDEROUS THINGS.

Just what Joan Rivers and Mickey Rourke need...new Frankenfruit to go with their Frankenfaces! I am sure all of the washed up celebs will endorse this and maintain that organic is a waste. Too bad Obama has let us down with Tom Vilsack running the US Dept Of Agriculture. Dole is going to be at the next inaugural ball, indeed! Spread the word and READ your labels! Demand ORGANIC! Your Axis of Evil is right here, folks. The issue is not so much the immediate vegetable consumption. It is the same issue as with GMO's: seed-tampering and the spreading of these seeds to good, organic crops rendering them useless, and also demanding payment for the "use of the patented seeds!". Start googling crop contamination by genetically modified seeds and you'll start to see a pattern. So... if you now say that the seeds are not genetically modified, but only BRED... How does that now allow you to play with words to achieve the same outcome? Just ask yourself WHY these companies would start breeding NOW, instead of having done it a long time ago, saving billions of dollars in the Research and Development of the gentetically modified varieties, the resulting bad press, etc. I smell a large, foul turd on the horizon.

I believe I read Dole no longer has pineapple production on the big island of Hawaii because it's cheaper to do it somewhere else, even though we benefit from the sun, soil and energy from Hawaii. And I believe Monsanto was the company that produced the carpeting in the building where I last worked which caused it to become a 'sick' building and many employees to develop brain tumors. Do we really want to eat spinach and broccoli touched by them? I grow it in my yard!

I've been writing about Monsanto for quite a while and it seems they've perfected the art of flying under the radar. I've written to Obama, the newspaper and anyone else I thought should know about their nefarious doings - but the groundswell of outrage hasn't manifested - yet. We might get a handle on Global Warming only to discover Monsanto has destroyed the food chain! The best theory I've heard about bee colony collapse is that the bees are encountering Monsanto's altered crops and either they're deadly, outright, to the bees or it disorients them so badly, they can't find their way back to their hives! For many years now, starting in the Reagan Administration, I believe, Monsanto has been placing moles at the FDA to ensure their irradiated, genetically modified and cloned products would, BY LAW, not be labeled as such! That means that the agency, whose duty it is to protect our food supply, has made it illegal to inform the public of these dangers!! That's also why the FDA has become such a joke. The collusion with those they're supposed to police is so blatant, it's a wonder anyone takes them seriously anymore! I suggest a protest aimed at both companies. Care2 might be a good place to start a written campaign. Also, call your congresspeople and the two companies and give 'em hell!

CMO's Russian Scientists: H1N1 linked to Genetically Modified Food PDF Print E-mail Monday, 22 June 2009 Scientists from Russia’s Ministry of Health are warning in a secret report to Prime Minister Putin that they have discovered a ‘critical link’ between the H1N1 influenza (Swine Flu) virus and genetically modified amylopectin potatoes that are consumed in massive quantities nearly exclusively by Westerners and sold in fast food restaurants as French Fries. According to these reports, the protease enzyme genetically modified in the potatoes being sold through Western fast food restaurants as French Fries to protect against Potato virus X causes an “explosive” replication of the H1N1 influenza virus by increasing the acidic conditions of the endosome and causing the hemagglutinin protein to rapidly fuse the viral envelope with the vacuole's membrane, then causing the M2 ion channel to allow protons to move through the viral envelope and acidify the core of the virus, which causes the core to dissemble and release the H1N1’s RNA and core proteins into the hosts cells. Evidence confirming these dire findings by top Russian scientists is also supported by the World Health Organization who in their reporting on the current Influenza Pandemic, clearly shows that the H1N1 virus is nearly totally confined to those Western Nations allowing their citizens to consume these genetically modified potatoes, and which include: The United States with over 17,000 cases being reported with 45 deaths; Canada with 2,978 cases; the United Kingdom with 1,226 cases; and Australia with 1,823 cases. Important to also note about the World Health Organization’s statistics on the spread of the H1N1 Pandemic influenza virus is that the South American Nation of Chile is the only country in the World outside of The United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia to allow the planting of these genetically modified potatoes due to their Free Trade Pact with the US and who are reporting 1,694 cases of this disease. Also important to note are that most of the World’s largest Nations do not allow the planting of these genetically modified potatoes and therefore are reporting very limited outbreaks of the H1N1 Pandemic influenza, including Russia with 3 cases, China, the World’s most populated country, with 318 cases, and India, the World’s second largest country, with 16. These reports further state that with the linkage between the H1N1 Pandemic influenza virus and fast food French Fries made from genetically modified potatoes the most venerable people to being infected are the youngest who, by far, are the largest consumers of these types of cheap Western foods, and which was recently confirmed by the Washington Post News Service that reported: “Of the 5,000 confirmed and more than 100,000 probable cases of swine flu, the average age of infected people is 15; two thirds are younger than 18.” These reports further warn that though the genetic history of this insidious man-made influenza seems to initially offer some protection for those Nations not consuming these genetically modified potatoes, to believe so would be a “grave mistake” as new evidence is emerging that this H1N1 Pandemic influenza virus is rapidly mutation, and as we can read from these two reports: “The new strain of influenza appears to have mutated to become more infectious for humans, the online edition of science magazine Nature reported Monday, referencing research by a team including Prof. Yoshihiro Kawaoka of Tokyo University's Institute of Medical Science. The surface of influenza virus particles are covered with thorn-shaped proteins called hemagglutinin (HA), which allows the virus to stick to human cells. After analyzing multiple samples of the new flu virus, the team ascertained that in some cases the HA of the new H1N1 strain have mutated, allowing the strain to stick to human cells more easily. According to Kawaoka, the same mutations have been found in HA of the H5N1 strain of influenza, the highly virulent bird flu, which kills about 60 percent of those it infects. Kawaoka said the virus is still in the process of mutating into a form even more infectious to humans.” -and- “Brazilian scientists have identified a new strain of the H1N1 virus after examining samples from a patient in Sao Paulo, their institute said Tuesday. The variant has been called A/Sao Paulo/1454/H1N1 by the Adolfo Lutz Bacteriological Institute, which compared it with samples of the A(H1N1) swine flu from California.” More ominously to be examined in these reports is the response of the United States to this Pandemic which, to date, is the World’s largest infected Nation (reporting 7 more H1N1 flu deaths today) and which has already declared a Public Health Emergency and, just yesterday, passed a bill in its Congress allocating $7.7 Billion to prepare themselves for this catastrophic disease. GMOs are NOT sustainable because farmers have to BUY seed every year which they cannot afford and GMOs lack natural reproductive potential. They also contaminate other crops thru crosspollination, interfering with the reproductive abilities of natural species = genocide = the destruction of Genome-species. Further, these GMO seeds require pesticides and other chemicals which small farmers cannot afford either, esp since they will not receive much if any of the money to help them BUY these corporate anti-life "plant protection products". All the gov has to do is to declare these technologies "advances" and that is that ... it does not matter if they are not truly advances. In fact, TRUTH AND INTEGRITY do not matter to corporations at all, and since they control our gov -- truth and integrity do not matter to our gov either because, to get elected, our mis-representatives and our President require huge donations from Big Biz Corporate Personhoods or they go down like Kucinich because they cannot get any Big Media coverage. The Media is "controlled" by these same multinational corporations. "They", the "Deciders", have been named the Global Dominance Group, GDG, by Peter Phillips. All Life Forms depend on eating other life forms in some form or other, including plants. This is the NATURE of LIFE. This is one of the meanings of the symbol of the snake swallowing its tail. When the food we eat has been fed sick "food" {pesticides antibiotics, hormones, chemical-synthetic-non-biological "nutrition"} that food will be sick. When the food we eat is sick, it makes us sick. "Crop Protection Chemicals" only protect the profits of Corporate Agro Business. To save ourselves and our planet, we need to return to more primitive "technologies" in our living practices and move forward to higher planes of awareness in all of our inter-relationships with each other and with other life forms.
