GM corn causes organ damage
January 11,2010

Genetically modified maize can damage the liver and other internal organs in mammals, according to a new study published in the International Journal of Biological Science.

In the study, rats were fed three GM maize products (NK 603, MON 810, MON 863) found in food and feed around the world, for four and half months. Compared to the rats consuming non-GM feed, the GM-fed rats experienced adverse impacts to many organs but particularly the liver and kidneys.

“Our analysis highlights that the kidneys and liver are particularly important on which to focus such research as there was a clear negative impact on the function of these organs in rats consuming GM-maize varieties for just 90 days,” the researchers said.

Each of the three maize strains presented different effects that were sex- and dose-dependent.

This research is very important, said Ken Roseboro, editor of the Non-GMO Report. "It is significant because it shows there is a health impact from consuming GMO foods and this should raise red flags to US manufacturers that [GMOs] should not be on the marketplace,” he said.

“Once the non-GMO Project seal starts appearing on products it will raise awareness," Roseboro said. “Most Americans are not aware of the GMO issue but when the label starts appearing alongside publicity about the Project, people will start to wonder and it will raise questions. Ideally we need GMO food labeling like in Japan and the EU. The Non-GMO Project is filling the void so that people have a non-GM choice,” he said.

Companies that will be carrying the Non-GMO Project Seal include Lundberg Family Farms, R.W. Garcia and Nature’s Path.

It's not nice to fool mother nature. Since GM corn does have a negative health effect on organs, what will happen when we start using this product to produce fuel products. Will we all be expose to harmful GM emissions?

I was in Ag. business school in the early 90's and was questioning back then if the seeds are genetically made to ward of insects- if they dont want to eat them why would humans ????? WAKE UP WORLD

Following the argument that GM maize causes organ damage, the end product from animals that are fed the product will also be affected, the same discussion as with pesticides and herbacides.

What about GMO Soybeans? What percentage of the soybeans grown in the US are gentically modified. Is soy the next corn?

As much as I'm in favor of consumers having the right to know if they're buying GMO, this report is complex and hard to understand. It doesn't seem like good evidence for one side or the other.

I guess the next step would be to do a scientific study with human beings consuming GM corn to see what damage might occur to bodily organs. The question arises, "Who in their right mind, once made aware of the serious health risks, would be willing to volunteer?" I would suggest that top Monsanto executives be invited to take part in such an experiment. A refusal by Monsanto execs to "eat their own GMO corn" might make interesting headlines and could also set an example for the rest of the world.

Currently, 98% of soy, 96% of cotton, 96% of canola, and almost 80% of corn is genetically modified in the U.S. Since these are the some of the main ingredients in processed food (80% of all the food we eat in the U.S. is processed), food analysts estimate that 75% of all the food we eat has genetically modified ingredients. We are the guinea pigs--if we choose to eat junk food!

Amelia, thanks for your comment. I agree that this is initial research and that more in-depth research must happen before and conclusions can be made. That said, this is some of the most comprehensive research to date in a very data-starved field, so it does deserve attention.

Too bad those scientists used flawed methodologies to "prove" their point http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/educationalmaterial/factsheets/factsheets2009/updateimpactofaustri4157.cfm

Curious to know how the researchers interpret this finding. How would an inserted gene cause a change in organ function? What was the organ filtering that is different than the non-modifed varieties? What gene(s) were in these varieties of GM corn?

Food Inc gives you the insight of how damaging GM Corn is for our livestock and the health of the Americans. GMO Soy is another culprite... NO GMO they are effecting our livestock, foods as additives and they aren't we wonderful to send the GM Corn and Soy oversees... We need to wake up and back to Nurturing Mother Nature and grow Organic....

GMO’s if you drink conventional dairy you are drinking a GMO dairy product. Dairy farmers are using GMO corn and soy to feed there cows and beef farmers are fatting up there animals with GMO corn and soy. You say but the animals eat it sure when there is nothing else to eat they have no chose but to go hungry. 85% of conventional food has corn starch in it. So make your chose and be responsible for your health.

I would like to share this, but the article is ambiguous....unless I'm not finding the important markers that make such an article worth sharing. WHO is "the researcher", where can the results of "the researcher's" findings be found. Have they been peer reviewed? I'm all for non-GMO, but if I passed this on to the folks I know the very first thing they'd want is the substantiating information behind this article.

GM anything is not harmful. Do your homework folks before you go off on some attempted food revolution. If GM food was banned, LETS JUST SAY, there would be an international food crisis/shortage. I also happen to agree with Aaron S, just because they throw technical names and cool abbreviations around doesn't make it so.

Why is this discussion going on WHILE the US is being flooded with GMO foods, which are rapidly replacing genetic diversity with corporate-engineered-for-profit plant strains? This should have been rigorously investigated first.

It's not that the CRY1A1 (and similar) genetic event makes insects not WANT to eat corn leaves, it just plain and simple kills them AFTER ingestion. having said that, organic corn is treated with massive doses of Bacillus Thuringiensis (from whose DNA CRYXXX is taken). MON810 was once (years ago) found to affect rats livers and kidneys by Monsanto itself. But, according to the hundreds of PhD's at UN FAO, GMO's are safe. no matter how much they tried, BT (and Hx) corn, as well as RR soybeans have NOT BEEN FOUND TO PRODUCE NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON MAMMALS - please read their (UN FAO's) 2003 report on the subject, which is quite definitive and is universally accepted to be more than thorough.

I agree that more research needs to be done. However, if GMOs are harmless, why are they banned in Europe?

While I don't believe GMO foods are good and eat organic as much as possible, I do believe that questionable studies or challenges need to be addressed to make an impact and really convince people that this is a serious problem. This website http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/ does challenge these studies and these challenges must be addressed instead of ignored.

MON - as in Monsanto? Liver and Kidney damage? MON Corn crops that aren't killed in "RoundUp" sprays - but non-GM corn crops perish in RoundUp? Uncontrolled cross pollination? Personally I believe it's time we really start to hold someone accountable for messing with Nature. Don't get me wrong trying to feed the world is a noble cause but we are taking short cuts across many industries without thinking of the long term consequences of our tampering.
