UNFI CEO refuses to sign natural marketing pledge
February 23,2010

The Coalition for a Sustainable Food Supply Chain said United Natural Food Inc. CEO Steven Spinner refused to sign a pledge promising to stop marketing conventional food as “natural” and increase the sales of certified organic foods.

The group, which includes the International Brotherhood of Teamsters as well as organic food advocates and environmental organizations, presented Spinner with the pledge at UNFIs Southeast Tabletop Show in Orlando, Fla. last week. The company holds the annual conference for its top retailers.

Providence, R.I.-based UNFI is the nation’s largest distributor of natural, organic and specialty foods and personal care products. The company supplies goods to Whole Foods Market.

Teamsters and their coalition allies said they have been asking UNFI and Whole Foods to end what Teamsters call “practices of monopolization, marketing natural over organic foods and violating workers rights throughout the supply chain.”

But UNFI Chairman Michael Funk called the request “a continuation of a policy of harassment” because of the Teamsters’ inability to unionize UNFI and Whole Foods workers.

The pledge they asked Spinner to sign also included promises to adopt fair trade standards that allow workers to choose representation and engage in collective bargaining and to promote sustainability by eliminating business practices that accelerate climate change.

“It is unfortunate that Steve Spinner speaks extensively about UNFI’s so-called sustainability commitment, but that he has not agreed to sign the pledge,” said John Williams, the Teamsters warehouse division director. “UNFI likes to talk the talk, but they also need to walk the walk.”

Teamsters also distributed leaflets to conference attendees that read, “What’s Gone Wrong at UNFI? Tell UNFI: Sign the Sustainable Food Chain Pledge Now.”

A UNFI spokeswoman said Spinner was traveling and could not be reached for comment.

But in a statement, UNFI Chairman Funk said: “This is just a continuation of a policy of harassment of UNFI and Whole Foods because of their inability to unionize the work force. Everyone in the natural products industry knows that over the last 35 years there has never been a stronger advocate of organic agriculture, fair trade items and products that benefit the environment than UNFI. If the teamsters are so concerned with climate change perhaps they should install solar panels at their headquarters, as UNFI has done."

The heading of your article is terrible and misrepresents the information. It should read: Teamsters Try To Squeeze UNFI!

Right on, Michael. You've nailed their agenda perfectly. The market, being the one and only true arbiter, continues to validate and reinforce your position. Keep up the good work, my friend.

I agree with Michael Funk. If a company has good relations with it's staff there is no reason to add the politics of unionization .

Way to go Mr. Spinner. They tried to boycott WholeFoods and it didn't work. UNFI has been a driving force in bringing organics to market. Where were the teamsters years ago when the market share was not where it is today?

How about this? Do a company-wide evaluation of wages for both UNFI and WFM from top earners to bottom earners and determine how competitive the companies are vs your local bowling alley or Wal Mart. It is all about stock holder, return-period. Organics are merely the vehicle of profits and good customer relations. And why did Mackey resign? His populist views about natural foods come back to haunt him?

Why doesn't UNFI want to actually become a sustainable company? It's a real shame that this company tries to stand for better but isn't really.

UNFI should sign the pledge. What are they afraid of? Many consumers are paying high prices for "natural" products, not knowing they are just greenwashed conventional products with "natural" label claims that, unlike certified organic foods, are not policed at all. Consumers end up with fewer certified organic choices while organic farmers continue to lose market share to "natural" imposters - did you know that less than 1% of American farmland is certified organic?

Funk is playing the old "bait and switch" that is so common in the corporate supermarket industry. This has nothing to do with who has solar panels - why doesn't UNFI start protecting organics and sustainable food instead of undermining them? This is ourageous. Sign the pledge, for godsake!

As a long-time organic/ethical food consumer and Whole Foods patron, I find this article to be deeply disturbing. I hope Whole Foods takes these issues seriously, and I have half a mind to write them asking why this distributor won't sign the fair trade pledge. Seems like a no-brainer.

I find it shocking that a company marketing natural and organic foods would refuse to sign a simple pledge ensuring that their claims are true. What, I would ask, do they have to hide? I thought that I could count on Whole Foods as my source of natural and organic produce, but clearly that is no longer the case. I for one will not shop at Whole Foods until this pledge is signed, and I would urge everyone else to do the same.

Who'd have thought Teamster strong arm thug tactics and "natural/organic" would be part of the same discussion. Understand who is "behind" the pledge, and the true "why" of the pledge, before you become an advocate for it. Wow.....

I work for UNFI and I can tell you why he didn't sign the pledge, UNFI is scared that if they give their employees the chance to vote in the union they will and then we would get affordable health care and proper wages and not be paid straight time across the board even if we work 60 hours a week. The Teamsters need to try and get in touch with the drivers in Sarasota,Fl and I think they would be surprised how many want to be union but have been told by management that we would all be fired if the union got voted in. I wish I could leave my name but I need my job so I hope the right people read this.

I agree with B.B. And they should add Chesterfield NH and Dayville CT to the list

We, the drivers of United Natural Foods Dayville CT are now proud members of Teamsters Local 493. Let it be known that WE contacted the Teamsters. Not the other way arround. WE did so because UNFI over the past few year has unapologetically taken from us what we have EARNED over the last 15, 20 and for some of us even 30 years. THE DRIVERS OF UNFI DAYVILLE.

I work unfi in Denver, once teamster came to unfi, Mr.Spinner just offered everybody 2 an 3 dollar bribes that wont kick in until Dec 26,2010.I bottom line, unfi will do anything not to have a union, and that all took place today 7/26/2010.But we`re not giving up, this company will respect their workers rights. BECAUSE IT`S THE AMERICAN WAY!
Posted By: David Ali on July 26,2010
So if are Unfi employee, hang in there because the weaker WE look the they stronger get.Remember the only thing Mr.Spinner and Funk has is their money.Which they gain on the backs of workers that they refuse to get any workers right. And this is coming from Company that FORBES mag.once rank as one of the top 25 best honest and best managed Co. Talk to u soon (UNITED WE WILL STAND)

If you vote that union out then you will never see that money! He could give you that money right NOW but he's not. Coincidence? I think not! Don't be fooled, stand strong and keep what you have worked HARD to earn! This is just a desperate attempt by Mr. Spinner to keep from losing control of even MORE of his warehouses. The ship is sinking, the wildfires are spreading and it's too late to stop it. I hope these people running this place can sleep well at night knowing that everyday they continue to take from their workers and their families so they can continue to justify their ridiculous compensation packages. Do you "get it" now Mr. Spinner? Do you?
Posted By: Concerned Citizen on July 28,2010
Thanks Concerned Citizen,we needed that vote of confidence, because the move Spinner pulled monday I just know that is was checkmate for us. As of 8/10/2010 unfi-whole foods will be working together, that workers from both warehouses that are 1/2 mile in distance from the other so again THANKS-AGAIN WE WILL CONTINUE TO FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT.Will keep you`ll updated on their next move, here in Denver. Fl,NH,TX,ROCKIN and all the unfi warehouses around the country dont give up.UNITED WE STAND. UNFIGREED666
