Less than 10 percent of organic acreage today uses organic seed. Over the past 50 or 60 years, control of the seed system has shifted from farmers and land grant universities to a handful of private companies that own the source of our food; these corporations, most notably the Missouri-based Monsanto Company, largely determine the type, quality and variety of seeds available.

NFM recently spoke with Matthew Dillon of the Organic Seed Alliance, an organization dedicated to the ethical development and stewardship of seed.
