2009 Industry Innovator Awards
September 16, 2009

NFM has a tradition of honoring the pillars of our industry with the Natural Legacy Award. But this year we have decided to focus our attention on the new generation of people and companies picking up where their predecessors left off. They are the game changers, transforming their categories to meet the evolving needs and interests of today's naturals consumer.

Join us on Sept. 24, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the Boston Convention Center North Lobby, while we present our inaugural Industry Innovator Awards. The winners span the marketplace—from an Oregon grocery chain bringing healthy food to underserved communities to a supplement company that put the fun back in taking vitamins to a network of young entrepreneurs keeping toxic chemicals out of personal care.

Are today's innovators tomorrow's legends? Only time will tell, but we know one thing for sure: It's going to be an adventure. Look for the Industry Innovator logo throughout this issue to read sound bites from our award winners.

Brian Rohter, New Seasons Market
It took a village to open the first New Seasons Market in Portland, Ore. Now CEO Brian Rohter is returning the love and embracing communities most in need of fresh, healthy food .

Jim Hoagland, Tambobamba
As the U.S. Latino population expands (see "Maximize Your Appeal to Latino Shoppers" on page 46), demand for all- natural Latin-inspired packaged foods, such as those from Tambobamba, will boom.

Timothy Childs, TCHO
Mark our words, single origin will revolutionize chocolate. And Cabaret is leading the charge with TCHO—eclectic, single-origin chocolates that prove you can taste the difference .

Pamela Giusto-Sorrells, Pamela's Products
While it's all the rage these days, gluten free was barely a glint in the industry's eye when Giusto-Sorrells baked her way through 50 batches of gluten-free chocolate-chip cookies in a quest to make them taste good .

Michael Bylinkin, Hero Nutritionals
Who says taking vitamins has to be a chore? With the introduction of adult gummy vitamins from the likes of Hero's Slice of Life brand, parents can stop sneaking their children's gummies.

Judi Shils, Teens Turning Green
Children really are our future. This network of teen advocates, led by Shils and her daughter Erin Shrode, prove that providing safe, natural beauty products to young consumers can change the world .
